How I organize my closet?

So it’s that time of year where I re-vamp my closet. This is when I switch out my winter wardrobe to full on summer mode. Usually I would get this done in April, but with the current pandemic, I decided to wait a bit considering I’m not wearing much of anything lately. But I’m not complaining.

So I’ve got two closets and a clothing rack. Keep in mind these closets are not spacious. I’ve got one of those cheap looking closets that you can purchase at Walmart and a built in one that comes in your bedroom. It’s more for extra space, along with the rack. Clearly I felt like putting in that disclaimer even though I didn’t need to but that’s what we’re working with. Along with a few baskets for even more storage. These baskets are such a lifesaver though!! I do have a few so highly recommend. I got mine from target forever ago but you can find them anywhere nowadays. Keep reading to see how I use them!!

Ok so now we’re just going to switch out my summer clothes from their plastic totes to my closet and vice versa. I usually start by taking my clothing from their totes and placing them on my bed. That way I’m left with empty totes and I can start folding the sweaters and sweatshirts from my closet and place them in the totes. That also goes for anything pants related. Makes for an easy transition.

Now we’re left with 3 full totes. Almost empty closets and an almost empty rack. So to speed up this process, I will start by hanging my summer clothes and place them on the rack as is. I say this method speeds up the process because once they’re on hangers I feel more inclined to begin organizing rather than leave them on my bed. Because I know once I get distracted with something else even if it’s not productive, I will most definitely leave it all on my bed. So I get myself really moving before ADHD takes over.

Keep in mind I don’t put every piece of clothing on the rack. Not sure the weight capacity so we’re not going to overdue it. But I do try to utilize the space as much as possible. So at this point I pick and choose which pieces are staying on the rack and which are moving to the closets. I always keep more essential looking pieces on the rack. Basically anything that I would wear most often.

So essentially 1 or 2 items from each category such as tees, tanks, sweatshirts, dresses, rompers/jumpsuits, jackets, etc. get put on the rack. I try to include almost every category so that I have some variety. Now you don’t have to do every category like if you don’t want to keep a jacket on there then no worries. I actually keep dresses in my built in closet so I keep a romper on the rack instead. Just a matter of personal preference. Once those pieces are picked out, I recommend organizing it by sleeve length so like tank to long sleeve or by color. I do both which is so not necessary but I find it looks more clean.

As for denim and the rest of my shorts. I utilize one of the baskets for shorts and denim is put in my cheap looking closet which actually has built in shelves. Not so cheap huh? I always keep a few sweatshirts out because it’s one of my favorite things to wear all year and I always purchase new ones every season so you can imagine how many I own. Since we’re in summer mode, these sweatshirts are super light weight. I keep them in my dresser drawer.

Another thing I keep throughout the year are leggings. The dancer in me needs my leggings but even if you don’t dance, they’re super nice to keep around because if you’re into working out, I have read that they help increase blood flow to your muscles which is very beneficial. Regardless, I always feel so much better training in leggings rather than shorts so there’s gotta be some truth to that. Those are placed in the last built in shelf of my closet.

Swimsuits are stored in my dresser drawer with bras, bralettes and sport bras. Shoes are placed on my staircase that leads to my room. So one pair for each step. Trying to utilize whatever space I can find. Maybe some sort of shoe storage will be my next purchase. I do have quite the converse collection so I keep their shoe boxes in a small stack next to my rack for extra shoe storage.

Whats your shoe size?
go to pair

So that is pretty much everything unless I forgot something which I wouldn’t be surprised. I do have this detachable set of 3 shelves that I’ve hung in my closet but I have no idea what to put in there. It’s literally just chillin in my closet so I will keep you guys updated on another post on what I’ve decided to use the shelves for and tips on how to maintain the organization of your closet. Be on the look out for that!! How do you guys organize your closet??
